McNair Middle School, AIDS Awareness and Prevention Program

McNair Middle School in DeKalb County, Georgia commemorated World AIDS Day 2007 with a week’s worth of activities and events.

Ms. Cheryl Hudson attended Global Health Action’s Counselor Workshop and used the lessons, information, and materials from that training to guide a dozen student peer helpers at McNair in developing and implementing AIDS awareness and prevention activities for the whole school.

Activities and events at McNair from December 3-7 included:

  • Morning announcements with AIDS facts
  • Wearing red ribbons throughout the week
  • Media Center information – brochures, fact sheets, and other materials
  • AIDS Quiz competition
  • Poster and slogan contest
  • Wearing red clothes one day in memory of those who have lost their lives to the virus
  • “Put A Can on AIDS” food drive
  • Guest speaker from AID Atlanta

These activities, events, and messages of awareness and prevention reached 826 students, virtually the entire McNair student body.

According to Ms. Hudson’s assessment of the program,“The information you provided was very helpful in helping to plan our activities. . . . I felt that you did a great job of offering your support. You were always available to answer any questions that we had. . . . I really liked receiving the [mini-grants], because then we were able to plan activities that encouraged participation from all of the McNair Family.
